Mark defends and prosecutes serious Crime including homicide, sexual offences, large-scale drug conspiracies, violence and complex fraud. He is instructed both on his own and as a leading junior.

Mark always ensures that his clients know exactly what the critical issues are, and what they have to address, and does not shy away from giving the appropriate advice. Mark is a persuasive advocate and believes in the power of an eloquent and structured closing speech: he understands how to communicate with a jury. He understands how stressful the trial process is for witnesses and goes the extra mile to make sure that they are comfortable with the court process so that they can concentrate on giving their evidence most effectively.

Mark is a Recorder appointed in 2019 and sits both in Crime and Family (children), both on the Midlands Circuit.

 

Expertise

Mark is a member of the CPS prosecutions panel at grade 4. He is also on the CPS rape prosecutions panel. He defends at the equivalent level of seriousness of offending and is regularly instructed in:

  • Cases involving driving fatalities
  • Sex crime
  • Fraud
  • Drugs
  • Money laundering and proceeds of crime
  • Violence

Mark has always been keen to assist clients in other areas of the law and has substantial experience defending in Vehicle and Operator Service Agency prosecutions, Directors’ Disqualification cases, Royal College of Nursing tribunal representation, and Ofsted appeals.

Mark’s long standing role as a Chair of Governors in a state primary school has led to him having a depth of knowledge in education law.

Featured Crime cases


R v B

Prosecution of a case involving historic abuse of male and female children who were members of the defendant’s choirs over a period of 20 years.


R v R

Prosecution of the murder of an an elderly widow whom the defendant knew through his role as her carer. The killing was particularly brutal and was carried out to prevent the deceased from reporting to the authorities that the defendant had been stealing form her.


Operation R

Defence of a case involving attempted Murder, Robbery, Conspiracy to Supply Heroin, Conspiracy to Supply Crack Cocaine. The case involved a serious assault on a man thought to have been a rival drugs dealer from out of town. He was stabbed in the head. The attack left him with life changing injuries.


R v B

The defence of a death by dangerous driving. The lay client was alleged to have been driving a commercial van too fast in a residential area, losing control of it so that it careered off the road and through the front window of a house and into the living room, crushing and killing the elderly occupant.


R v M

Defence (including consideration of the M’Naghten Rules) of 22 year old paranoid schizophrenic arrested for the attempted murder of his mother’s partner.
