Caighli Taylor specialises in Crime, both prosecuting and defending in a wide range of cases in the Crown Court.

She also undertakes instructions to appear at Inquests. She is a Grade 3 prosecutor and also prosecutes for the Probation Service, G4S and the Home Office. Caighli has a particular interest in representing young defendants.

Expertise

Caighli joined the Crime team in 2012.

Caighli has undertaken cases varying broadly in nature and complexity. She regularly defends and prosecutes in cases of serious violence, public disorder, drugs, fraud, theft, robbery, burglary, road traffic offences, arson, firearms and weapons, dangerous dogs, perverting the course of justice and indecent images.

Caighli is often instructed in cases involving a party with particular vulnerabilities including mental health issues. As such, she has experience and expertise in mental health in the context of the criminal justice system. She is regularly instructed to defend young and vulnerable clients facing serious charges.

She has been instructed as junior counsel in the high profile prosecution of thirteen men who were convicted of the rape and abuse of teenage girls. Caighli handled the extensive disclosure in this case and dealt with sensitive material and PII issues.

Caighli is a CPS Grade 3 Prosecutor. She also receives instructions from Probation, the Welfare Rural and Health Division, UK Border Agency and the Home Office. She has experience of both prosecuting and defending in the Youth Court.

Featured Crime cases


Successfully defended a case involving serious allegations of violence by a prisoner against several prison officers. The case involved cross-examination of six prison officers and a serving prisoner. The defendant was acquitted of all charges.


Securing a suspended sentence for a defendant in relation to affray and threatening with a machete. The incident involved a violent affray with multiple weapons resulting in criminal damage to an occupied property.


Successfully prosecuting the robbery of an elderly man in his home, for which the Defendant received nine years imprisonment.


Successfully defending a dogs case involving the alleged biting of a postal worker, where the technical ‘Householder Defence’ was relied upon.


Successfully appealing against the destruction order of a dog which had bitten a neighbour.


Successfully prosecuting a theft conspiracy led by an employee, which was found primarily on telephone communication analysis.


Successfully prosecuting a robbery which involved complex cell-site analysis.


Defending a young woman who pleaded guilty to a group robbery, common assault and racially-aggravated ABH involving separate complainants on one evening, and mitigating to achieve a total sentence of 14 months imprisonment.


Successfully prosecuting a theft case which involved a complainant who suffered from short-term memory loss.


Successfully prosecuting a Defendant charged with multiple historic assaults on his wife.


Successfully defending a robbery on an application to dismiss, which turned on the issue of intoxication and absence of specific intent.


Successfully prosecuting a Defendant charged with making indecent images. The Defendant was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.


Defending a young woman with mental health needs who pleaded guilty to assaulting other residents in her care home. The case involved careful consideration of issues of fitness to plead and sentencing options.


Successfully prosecuted a racially aggravated public order offence whereby the case turned on the definition of ‘racial hostility.’
