International Women’s Day, celebrated globally on Saturday, 8th March 2025, is an important opportunity. Guildhall Chambers recognises and celebrates the achievements of women. Additionally, the day helps in raising awareness about gender equality and women’s rights.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, ‘Accelerate Action,’ aims to speed up the rate of gender equality. According to data from the World Economic Forum, it will take until 2158. This is roughly five generations from now, to achieve full gender parity at the current rate of progress.
Guildhall Chambers has highlighted some of the Women in Chambers:
Selena Plowden KC, a first tier ranked silk by the Legal 500, was appointed to the steering committee of the Western Circuit Women’s Forum (WCWF). She has been serving as a Tribunal Judge (Mental Health) since 2007. Selena regularly appears at inquests representing families, the NHS, commercial healthcare providers, individual clinicians, and other commercial organisations. Her recent cases involve fatalities arising from the management of a haematological condition, cardiac surgery, the placement of a gastrostomy tube, electrocution, and drug abuse.
Liz Cunningham, joined our Employment and Discrimination team last year. She is an accredited Volunteer Trainer with the ‘Schools Consent Project,’ and practised as a barrister at local chambers until May 2015. After that, she took up a Senior Lecturer post at the University of the West of England. In 2017, she was appointed to the Bar Standards Board Education and Training Committee. In 2018, she became an Assistant Chief Examiner at the Bar Standards Board. Alongside her BSB work, Liz developed an independent employment law consultancy, workplace investigation and training practice. She also qualified as a Civil and Commercial Mediator with ADR Group.
Kriti Upadhyay heads the Court of Protection and Public Law team. She is a leading junior in Clinical Negligence, Professional Negligence, and Court of Protection. Additionally, she appears before the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s professional disciplinary panels on a range of cases. She regularly represents nurses and midwives at substantive NMC hearings lasting five or more days. These cases involve complex allegations, including clinical concerns, misconduct, and health issues. They also cover Interim Order and Substantive Order review hearings and inquests.
Lottie Mallin-Martin has built a mixed practice in commercial, employment, and discrimination law. She has been recognised as a ‘Rising Star’ in the Legal 500. She is also listed on the Pro Bono Recognition List for England and Wales. Lottie was named Pro Bono Lawyer of the Year at the Bristol Law Society Awards 2024.
There is also a host of events taking place. Our own Sarah Hornblower will speak at the Devon and Somerset Law Societies Women in Law Seminar.
