Susan specialises in a variety of areas of law that includes criminal, licensing, driving defence cases, regulatory/disciplinary and inquest hearings. She works primarily in crime covering a wide range of cases for both prosecution and defence. Susan has maintained her licensing expertise before Licensing Authorities and on appeal in the Magistrates' Court.
Susan is regularly instructed to prosecute and represent defendants in the Crown Court. Her practice covers all aspects of criminal cases that involve, drugs, arson, grievious bodily harm, false imprisonment, fraud and robberies.
Susan has done a considerable number of cases defending the owners (or keepers) of dogs in prosecutions, generally after the dogs have bitten either a person or another dog. The great fear is that the dog may be destroyed, but Susan has always been successful in preventing destruction, and ensuring that a Control Order is made instead.
Susan is a specialist in dealing with licensing cases. Susan trained with a small London firm of solicitors who had both a local and national client base. She has acted for Lidl as their licensing advocate in the South East, and for pubs, clubs, restaurants and every type of premises in between. Acting for applicants and, increasingly, for Licensing Authorities in prosecuting she has considerable expertise in all aspects of Premises Licences. Her long and varied expertise covers both liquor and entertainment licenses and extends into taxi and HGV licenses. Susan co-wrote Licensing the New Law with Kerry Barker in 2003.
She also has many years experience of defending drivers prosecuted for a wide variety of Road Traffic offences, both in the Magistrates and Crown Courts.
Susan regularly acts upon instruction from the Nursing and Midwifery Council, representing the interests of registered nurses both at disciplinary hearings and, on occasion, at inquests. This entails detailed understanding of both regulations and also medical terminology. She will typically represent a nurse throughout the different stages of proceedings and aims to achieve the best outcome whilst and perhaps most importantly - being able to empathise with and support the nurses who are undergoing a stressful disciplinary process.
Susan has covered numerous inquests, both in road traffic accidents (usually acting for the driver) and also for families after a death in hospital. In March 2013 Susan acted for the Health and Safety Executive at an inquest into the death of a soldier who had died during training in the UK. This required thorough knowledge of both HSE guidelines and also infantry training requirements.
