Pupillage

From the moment that we select our pupils we regard them as future tenants. We welcome them into Chambers before pupillage begins so that they can begin to build a relationship with their supervisor and other members of Chambers. Each pupillage is with a specific team and specialisation is encouraged from early on.

Guildhall Chambers is one of the UK’s leading barrister sets. We have adopted a specialist team approach and feel that this best meets the needs of our clients and leads to better service provision. Pupillage is, therefore, undertaken within the structure of a specialist team.

Pupils' progress is monitored closely by the supervisor and the head of the Pupillage Committee and feedback is given regularly. Pupils are encouraged to spend time with, and do work for, as wide a number of members of the team as possible in order to gain maximum experience of different styles of work and levels of seniority. Each pupil has, as well as a supervisor, a mentor who is another member of the team to whom he or she can turn in confidence if necessary. It is of great importance to Chambers that each pupil feels properly supported during what can be an exciting but challenging year and we do all that we can to ensure this.

Funding

£22,500 grant and £17,500 guaranteed earnings. Up to £7500 of the grant can be drawn down in the BPTC year.

We offer our pupils:

  • Close monitoring and mentoring
  • Full IT provision with dedicated e-mail
  • Paid transport to and from professional engagements*
  • Regular internal training
  • Attendance at relevant training courses, funded by Chambers
  • Access to a formal grievance procedure

*during first six only, not available during second six.

Crime Team 

Excellence in court and unrivalled clerking support out of court are the long-standing hallmarks of the Guildhall Chambers Criminal Team. The Team has an established and well-deserved reputation for delivering quality, effective advocacy and prompt, accurate advice in an approachable, understanding and thoughtful manner.

With 5 silks and 20 junior tenants our Criminal Team continues to flourish in the most challenging of times. While always interested in speaking with successful practitioners who may wish to join us, we are particularly interested at present in applications from talented, industrious and ambitious individuals at the early stage of their career who will complement and enhance the Team.

Civil Practitioners

Mini-pupillage

Undertaking a work experience placement (mini-pupillage) at Guildhall Chambers provides an opportunity to experience all elements of life as a barrister including being in court; observing conferences with lay clients and instructing solicitors; and drafting legal documents. Mini-pupils will also have the opportunity to talk with members of Chambers and ask them questions about their profession and the Pupillage application procedure.

Due to the number of applications that Guildhall Chambers receive each year we cannot accommodate everyone. We offer approximately twelve three-day placements between June and September each year. We do not offer placements outside of this period. The placements are restricted to applicants who have reached at least the first year of their undergraduate degree.
