Hosted at the Bristol Marriott Royal, the Guildhall Chambers’ Property, Trusts and Estates Team are hosting their annual seminar with a half-day packed full of useful talks in the property realm.

The current schedule is as follows:

8:30 – 9:15: Refreshments and registration

9:15 – 9:30: Chair’s Address (HHJ Paul Matthews)

9:30 – 10.45: Everything you always wanted to know about Proprietary Estoppel but were afraid to ask

Well, not everything… but Christopher Hare, Michael Selway and Ollie Murrell will present an extended talk on this important area, including:

  • Analysis of the thorny issue of the relationship between proprietary estoppel and Section 2 of the Law of Property (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1989
  • Case study of Winter v Winter [2023] EWHC 2393 (Ch), a decision of Zacaroli J sitting in the High Court in Bristol, in which Michael and Hugh Sims KC acted
  • Review of numerous other recent cases, such as, just from last year, Spencer v Spencer, Hughes v Pritchard, Vasami v Hack and Steels v Steels

10:45 – 11:00: Break and refreshments

11:00 – 12:00: Wolverhampton City Council and others v London Gypsies and Travellers and others [2024] 2 WLR 45: where are we now with newcomer injunctions, and what has the Supreme Court told us about equitable principles and injunctive relief?

Christopher Stoner KC, Oliver Mitchell and Jessica Sharratt will consider the recent Supreme Court decision in Wolverhampton City Council, its implications for parties seeking, or resisting, injunctions against unidentified and future trespassers, and its broader significance for the grant of equitable injunctive relief.

12:00 – 12:50: Hot Cases: case law roundup of other significant property cases

Jay Jagasia, Kate Harrington and other members of the Property team will consider recent cases of significance in property litigation and their wider implications

12:50 – Lunch and close
