We have adopted a specialist team approach to our practices for many years. We feel that this is the way our clients want us to work, and that specialisation leads to the provision of a better service.
The clerks within Guildhall Chambers are the backbone of our business, providing expertise and support to our barristers across all teams.
The clerks comprise our Practice Director – Crime & Sports and the Practice Director – Civil, along with Practice Managers and Assistant Practice Managers covering all areas of law. The clerks are the first point of contact for our clients, and negotiate fees, manage diaries, and undertake business development.
Our business operations team includes the Civil Strategy Director, Finance Manager, Fees Clerks, IT Manager, Marketing Executive, Events Executive, Facilities Assistant and Receptionist.
We are seeking to recruit an Assistant Practice Manager (APM, within our clerking team supporting our Commercial, Insolvency & Restructuring, and Property, Trusts & Estates (PRINSCOM) teams of barristers. The PRINSCOM teams (with over 30 barristers) have a dedicated clerking team of one Practice Manager and two Assistant Practice Managers, overseen by our Practice Director Civil.
This practice-management team looks after all aspects of each barrister’s legal practice, dealing with solicitors who wish to instruct a barrister and then managing everything involved in the administration of the case on behalf of the barrister through to its conclusion, working with the solicitors, the barrister, the courts and others. The team is also involved in helping each barrister to develop their practice throughout their career and in business-development activities with clients and prospective clients.
We wish to recruit a junior APM. No previous practice-management experience is required, although it would be of benefit, as would other experience and understanding of barristers’ chambers (perhaps as a junior clerk) or the wider legal system – working in a law firm, within the court system or elsewhere as a paralegal or a legal claims handler. The tasks a junior APM will undertake day to day are wide-ranging and often challenging, involve a high degree of collaboration, teamwork and multitasking, and, we hope, give a good deal of satisfaction. You will quickly learn to manage case papers, arranging case conferences and other meetings, juggling diaries, handling fee arrangements, and then helping to build client relationships and liaising with everyone about every current case. The starting salary for this role will depend on your experience, and will be in the range of £26K to £30K.
This is a permanent, full-time role, working 37.5 hours per week on a team rota between 08:30 and 18:00, Monday to Friday. There is scope for working from home for up to two days per week after successful completion of probation.
The job attracts 25 days’ paid holiday a year in addition to public holidays, as well as other benefits including pension, private medical insurance and a bonus scheme.
Candidates will need to be a British or Irish citizen or otherwise have the right to work in the UK and have:
