The Employment and Discrimination Team is pleased to announce its annual Employment Seminar will be taking place at the M-Shed, Bristol on Thursday 29th September.

The theme of the seminar is Disability Discrimination, an area where significant change and increasing technicality pose challenges for practitioners. Over the half-day session, the Team’s specialist barristers will discuss: PCPs, practical considerations when structuring claims, objective justification defences and, post Brexit, the future for discrimination rights.

Dealing with the technical as well as the practical, this seminar will provide practitioners with a welcome refresher in order to assist them in dealing with the demands of disability discrimination claims.

Materials and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

The seminar will close with drinks on the terrace.

SEMINAR PROGRAMME

1.30: Registration

2.00: Welcome 

2.05: High on PCPs – Allan Roberts, Guildhall Chambers
Allan will provide insight into how it is possible to use PCPs to gain a strategic advantage and some of the tactical pitfalls that need to be borne in mind when conducting indirect discrimination and reasonable adjustments claims.

2.50: Structuring the claim – practical guidance – Geraint Probert, Guildhall Chambers
In a short and engaging interactive workshop, Geraint will provide practical tips on how to structure a disability discrimination claim (or to defend one) from issue until remedy.

3.15: TEA & COFFEE BREAK (10 minutes)

3.30: Justified – Debbie Grennan, Guildhall Chambers
Justification is often cited but frequently misunderstood.  However, it is frequently the margin between success and failure in disability discrimination litigation.   In this masterclass, Debbie Grennan will provide guidance on how to ensure that legitimate aims are properly identified, and proportionate means are evidenced before the Employment Tribunal, and the tactics that can be used on both sides to win the day.

4.15: Conscious uncoupling- what next for European disability discrimination rights? Nick Smith, Guildhall Chambers
Following the narrow win for Brexit in the referendum, Nick Smith will examine the likely direction of travel for disability discrimination rights during the immediate period of departure from the EU and beyond.

Cancellation
Provided notice is received at least 48 hours before the seminar, the seminar fee will be refunded less a £20 (+VAT) administration charge.

Under the Law Society’s CPD scheme and the Bar Council’s New and Established Practitioners’ Programme the conference is accredited with 3 CPD points (Training reference:1383).
