£2m fine for City Council after fatality

15/12/2023

Newport City Council were yesterday fined £2m in respect of health and safety failings which led to the death of a road worker.

Sam Jones was instructed to prosecute on behalf of the HSE.

Newport City Council pleaded guilty to two offences contrary to the Health and Safety at Work Act. The offences arose out of road repair works being undertaken on a road running beneath the M4 motorway in Newport in July 2019.

Tragically, due to the inadequacies of the safety measures in place, a City Council employee was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.

More information on the case can be found here.
